Whoopi Goldberg gets top dollar for 1890 Victorian home in Berkeley

July 22--A Berkeley home owned by comedian, actress and talk show host Whoopi Goldberg proved to be one hot-ticket item.

Listed for sale in June for $1.275 million, the Victorian-style estate on a about one-third of an acre went under contract in about 10 days and sold last week for $2.025 million, $750,000 over the asking price. The property previously sold for $335,000 in 1985, records show.

Built in 1890, the two-story home features such classic details as a front porch embellished with delicate fretwork, double-hung windows and wood finishes. The 1,455 square feet of living space includes an updated kitchen, formal living and dining rooms and three bedrooms.

Adjacent to the main house is a detached barn/cottage with three rooms, a second kitchen and a full bathroom in 1,635 square feet. A screened sun room/porch with a fireplace is topped by a row of skylights.

Outdoors, grounds center on a tree-topped patio with curved brick planters and a large expanse of grass. There are five garages on the property.

Goldberg, 59, relocated to the East Bay during the late 1970s and was active in the local improv scene, performing with the Blake Street Hawkeyes Theater troupe.

The television and film actress is known for her Oscar-winning role in "Ghost" (1990) as well as "The Color Purple" (1985), "Sister Act" (1992) and the TV series "Star Trek: The Next Generation." More recently, she has been a panelist on "The View" since 2007.

Colleen Larkin of Thornwall Properties was the listing agent. Laura Margulius of Better Homes and Gardens Mason-McDuffie Real Estate represented the buyer in the sale, which was first reported by Curbed San Francisco.
