Whoopi Goldberg and Jennifer Saunders will star in a limited run of Sister Act The Musical in London next summer.
The Academy Award-winning Goldberg returns to the role of Deloris Van Cartier 28 years after starring in the film of the same name.
Saunders, who is also set to star in a West End transfer of Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit, plays Mother Superior, a nun who takes Deloris into her convent when she witnesses a mafia hit.
Goldberg said: “The original Deloris is back, a little older, a little seasoned, but really still kind of out there.”
Sister Act comes to London following a spring UK tour and will run for just 39 performances from July 29-August 30 at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith. Brenda Edwards, who plays Deloris in the tour, will star in Thursday matinee performances in London.
It features music and lyrics by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater, and a book by Cheri and Bill Steinkellner.
The 1992 film, which starred Dame Maggie Smith and Harvey Keitel, made hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office and spawned a sequel and stage show.
Producer Jamie Wilson said it had been revised and refreshed to create a “newly adapted production”.
He said: “This is a very special one-off opportunity created just for London to see one of the most loved actors of our time playing the part she is so famous and so loved for.
“The addition of Jennifer means that Sister Act truly promises to be the ultimate night of laughs and smiles with two comedy greats. I’m also thrilled that Brenda Edwards, who has been so instrumental in Whoopi agreeing to return to the stage, has been able to schedule her TV commitments so she can play Deloris on Thursday matinees. It really is going to be a brilliant summer.”
