Whole year at Llanelli primary school told to self-isolate after positive Covid test

Year 6 pupils at a Carmarthenshire primary school have been told to self-isolate at home after a positive test for coronavirus.

The individual is part of Swiss Valley Community Primary School in Llanelli.

It has not been confirmed if the positive test concerns a pupil in Year 6 or a member of staff, but all students and teachers of that year group are being told to stay away from the school.

The news was confirmed by the school’s headteacher, Ceri Morris, on Monday, September 21.

In a letter to parents and guardians he said: “We have been informed that an individual at our school has tested positive for Covid-19.

“We would like to reassure you that there is no immediate cause for concern and provide you with as much information as possible.

“We are working closely with Carmarthenshire Council and NHS Wales’ Test, Trace, Protect system, and are following all the advice and guidance provided to us.”

Mr Morris also confirmed that pupils and staff members of Year 6 at Swiss Valley Swiss Valley Community Primary School have been identified as coming into close contact with the individual who has tested positive.

For that reason, all pupils and staff members of that school year are being told to work from home “as a precaution”, while parents and pupils will be contacted separately to confirm whether they need to self-isolate for 14 days.

The news at Swiss Valley was confirmed less than a day after another Llanelli school - Ysgol Pen Rhos - confirmed a positive test for coronavirus, leading to the whole of Year 4 being told to self-isolate.

Meanwhile, A-level students at Coleg Sir Gar are also self-isolating after three students tested positive for Covid-19.

A spokeswoman for Carmarthenshire Council said: “We have robust procedures in place and the Test, Trace, Protect process is being followed.

The process of testing and contact tracing is part of the ‘new normal’ and where schools follow these guidelines carefully, there is no cause for alarm.

“It is important to remember that coronavirus has not gone away. We must all remain vigilant and maintain social distancing and continue to wash our hands frequently in order to minimise the risk of transmission of the virus.”
