One Dublin local has said her town is "nearly empty" after the closure of yet another iconic shop.
GameStop in Dun Laoghaire will have its last day of trading on January 18th as the company continues to wind down operations worldwide.
During a Q3 2019 earnings meeting, GameStop CEO George Sherman announced that the company would be closing stores all over Europe in the coming months.
The company expects the cull to be complete by late 2020 which is part of an ongoing effort to "optimize our global store fleet" and help rejuvenate the business after it reported a loss last year of over €600 million.
The store in Dun Laoghaire announced the news by leaving just a sign in their window which apologised for any inconvenience caused.
One local expressed her sadness admitting that the "Whole of Dun Laoghaire is nearly empty now".
Another argued: "Rents are way too expensive something needs to be done or there’ll be nothing left there soon."
But one person counteracted the argument saying: "Not surprised - they went into more merchandise rather than games, which didn't suit neither the name nor the gamers. I doubt it's a DL thing - have seen a few of them drop off the map. It's unfair to blame every shop closure on rate fees."
And a fourth person shone a little hope on the future of stores in the area stating: "Found this closure hard to believe. I have a vintage store, called Slaughterhouse vintage, for over a year and we find theft is very low, and trade is good. People love to knock DL. It has huge potential but too many naysayers.
The nearest GameStop stores for those missing the Dun Laoghaire shop can now be found in Dundrum and Bray.
