Whole host of activities on offer at primary school's sports camp

Pupils at St Thomas Primary in Wishaw enjoyed a whole host of activities during an fun-filled sports camp.

The school teamed up with charity Achieve More Scotland to put on a wide range of sports and games for the children.

Headteacher Mary Ann Preston said: “It’s the first time we have held such an event and it was something the children really enjoyed.

“The charity had received funding from Cash for Kids and the Terrace Cafe in Wishaw provided lunch each day for everyone who attended.

“The kids had only been back at school for a few weeks then the Easter holidays came so there have been limited opportunities for them to get out and about.

“Everything was completely free but you can’t put a price on the fun they all had.”

Among the activities pupils took part in included basketball, football and even American football.

There was also a chance to have fun on the school’s climbing frame and even having a race or two on the spacehoppers.

“I don’t think many of them knew what a spacehopper was,” said Mrs Preston.

“I think the children just enjoyed being outside.

“As well as the sports and the games we also had some arts and crafts so there was a wide range of things for them to enjoy.

“The management team were all there and it was so nice to see children out there looking relaxed and happy with their friends.

The school are now hoping to host a similar camp in the summer due to their continued work with the charity.

Mrs Preston added: “The feedback we have had from the children and the parents has been superb so we are looking at trying to have an event like this over the summer holidays.

“Some of the kids would not have had the chance to try some of these sports so they might take an interest in one of the activities we put on.”
