Who won the Irish Derby 2019? Full result from the Curragh

Sovereign caused a huge shock to win the 2019 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh today.

On paper, Padraig Beggy's mount (33/1) was the least fancied of Aidan O'Brien's three runners in the mile and half race.

And when he and stablemate Norway stretched into a big early lead, it looked they were only there to be the pacemakers.

But the chasing pack couldn't catch Sovereign in the straight with Epsom Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck coming home a six lengths behind in second ahead of Norway in an O'Brien 1-2-3.

Kevin Predergrast's Madhmoon couldn't land a blow back in fourth in what was a race for the bookmakers.

It is the second classic for jockey Beggy who was also on board Wings of Eagle when he was a shock 40/1 winner of the English Derby in 2017.

Irish Derby 2019 full result:

1st: Sovereign 33/1

2nd: Anthony Van Dyck 5/4F

3rd: Norway 16/1
