Who won Great British Bake Off 2020? Peter Sawkins confirmed as youngest winner ever

Peter Sawkins has been crowned the winner of Great British Bake Off 2020, making him the youngest champion ever on the series.

The 20 year old beat fellow finalists Dave Friday and Laura Adlington to the trophy in the famous baking tent.

It was a tense finale filmed amidst the UK heatwave, with temperatures soaring to around 35C throughout the latest series, filmed amid the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown.

Of the 12 bakers who rose to the challenge, it was Peter who proved victorious.

In complete shock over his win, he confessed it's something he has wanted since he was a child.

He said: "I can’t quite believe that I am here, I can’t quite believe that I made it onto the show, and I can’t quite believe that the show happened.

"This is going to be a really huge chapter in my life, and what a way for it to end."

Judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood chose their winner after a series of huge tasks - one of which left Laura in tears.

They had given them three more tasks to prove why they should be the winner, and it became the "closest final they had ever had to judge".

First there was the task of baking the perfect Custard Slice, combining set custard and puff pastry.

Secondly, the bakers had the Technical Challenge, and were asked to make a Walnut Whirl.

Their final ever challenge on the show, the Showstopper, was the chance to prove their skills with a dessert tower of their choice.

It was Peter who won them over, as he was crowned the youngest ever winner of Bake Off.

Paul said: "Peter should be exceptionally proud. He is the youngest winner we have ever had and the first Scottish winner."

Prue added: "Do you know I am terribly proud of Peter and I feel as if he is my grandson.

"He is such a nice guy and he is so eager to learn, you can’t not like him."

Winner Peter will appear on Jo Brand's spin-off The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice on Friday 27 November at 8.00 pm on Channel 4.
