Who won Ballon d'Or? Virgil van Dijk and Lionel Messi battle decided

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has finished second behind Lionel Messi in the race for the Ballon d'Or.

Messi, who was the heavy favourite to lift the trophy, was confirmed as this year’s winner at a star-studded ceremony at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris on Monday night.

It is the sixth-time the Argentine has claimed the gong, with him never finishing lower than second for each of the last eight seasons he has been involved in the competiton.

The Reds centre-back can count himself unlucky not to have piped the Barcelona star after a year to remember for both club and country.

Having played a huge role in the Liverpool side that secured the Champions League in June, and went within inches of claiming the Premier League title, the Dutchman helped his nation secure their spot at Euro 2020 after playing in the side that finished second in the UEFA Nations League.

Liverpool were heavily represented in the top 10 with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Alisson all making the top seven.
