Who wins the truce? Israelis and Palestinians count cost of surprise conflict

THE DEBATE © FRANCE 24

So who wins the truce? As international pressure for a ceasefire mounts, we take stock of 11 days of fighting between Israel and the Palestinians, the worst since a 50-day war back in 2014. Back then, it was squarely about the Gaza Strip. This time, Jerusalem was the spark, a wake-up call for those who thought the Middle East might move on from the Palestinian cause with the recent normalisation of ties with Arab states.

Tuesday's general strikes across the Occupied Territories and inside Israel among Arab citizens serve as an illustration of how military objectives alone do not a victory make. At the heart of it is the same Israeli prime minister who was at the helm during the previous wars with Gaza.

This time, and while Benjamin Netanyahu has the public support of its most important ally, the United States, could that support run dry? And will the 11 days that sidelined his rivals' bid to form a coalition government ultimately play in his favour or prove his last stand?

Produced by Alessandro Xenos, Juliette Laurain and Imen Mellaz.
