Who will win Rangers vs Celtic? Our writers make their big game predictions for Ibrox showdown

It's almost derby day in Glasgow - and it's a game with a unique twist for both Rangers and Celtic.

After lifting the Premiership title last season, Steven Gerrard's side have got their defence off to a sluggish start with some disappointing displays after the unbeaten league season.

Into the bargain, the club have been blighted by Covid woes this week and there are several question marks over the starting line-up.

Across the city, Ange Postecoglou is gearing up for his first taste of derby day.

It's been a quick change in tone from the end of last season at Celtic under the Australian with a revamped squad shining in the early-season encounters.

So how will the game go? Here's what our writers had to say.

KEITH JACKSON

We’re going to need a bigger fence. Even by Old Firm standards this one is almost impossible to predict. Rangers have been a flaky shadow of themselves so gar this season and although Angeball looks great going forward Celtic operate a swing door policy at the back.

If Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos are in the mood they could do some serious damage. But then we don’t even know if Kent will be available. Likewise, new boy Kyogo will fancy his chances of making an impression on derby day.

The only certainty is goals. And perhaps plenty of them.

Celtic seem to be hitting form domestically and there is no doubt Rangers will have been impacted by their Covid-19 issues and also the long trip to Armenia.

I think it will be a winning start for Ange Postecoglou with Kyogo Furuhashi likely to be the main man again for the Hoops.

If McGregor, Tavernier and Kent can play, it’s obvious Rangers will have a better chance of winning. Even without them, I think they’ll just edge what should be a cracking contest.

In the likes of Roofe and Morelos, they’ll have too much for a Celtic backline that still looks dodgy under pressure.

And while Celtic have been great going forward, Davis and Kamara can offer the Rangers defence protection that could curb Kyogo Furuhashi and Liel Abada in what will be an Old Firm baptism of fire for them.

SCOTT MCDERMOTT

This has the makings of a classic because both defences can be easily got at. Celtic will press high, force mistakes and probably score. But if Rangers - even without key man Allan McGregor - are clever and exploit the visitors’ vulnerable backline down the channels, the likes of Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe will get plenty of joy.

Rangers 3 Celtic 2

CRAIG SWAN

Celtic are in better form than Rangers right at this moment and their speed in attack might just give them the edge with Steven Gerrard’s team not playing to full potential.

Rangers 1 Celtic 2

MICHAEL GANNON

It looks wide open and it could be 4-0 to either side. Celtic only know how to attack but that plays right in to the Rangers countering style. There should be goals… so it’ll only finish one way.

Rangers 0 Celtic 0

GAVIN BERRY

We are due a bit of a bonkers game and this could be the day. Rangers have lost their fear factor and aren’t as solid as the back and Celtic, flying in attack, can exploit that but the Hoops defence couldn’t keep hens out of a close. Strap yourselves in.

Rangers 3 Celtic 3

ANDY NEWPORT

With neither side exactly watertight at the back this has all the makings of a classic. Rangers have Covid concerns but Celtic will be short on hauners with their away support locked out so I’m going for a Desmond.

Rangers 2 Celtic 2

GORDON PARKS

It’s early days but the signs are that a resurgent Celtic have their attacking mojo back and that verve will be enough to claim the win but Rangers will breach their ropey defence.

Rangers 1 Celtic 2

FRASER WILSON

There are so many uncertainties ahead of this one which makes it tough to predict. How many - if any - of Rangers’ Covid casualties will be back? How much will the long-haul journey back from Armenia affect the Ibrox side?

There’s no doubt the attacking momentum is with Celtic but Rangers will be roared on by a capacity home crowd. It’ll depend on which defence copes best with the pressure and the occasion. Right now even that’s hard to predict. A point apiece and nobody is too upset.
