Who will win Celtic vs St Johnstone? Our writers make their big game predictions for Premier Sports Cup semi final

Scottish football gets plenty of flak but most agree the revamped League Cup has been a roaring success since the group stage was introduced in 2016.

It wipes away the cobwebs with pre-season processions a thing of the past as sides battle it out to reach the last 16.

And now only four teams remain in the Premier Sports Cup as we head to Hampden with everything still to play for.

Rangers and Hibs must wait until Sunday as St Johnstone and Celtic grab the headlines facing off in a primetime Saturday evening clash at the national stadium.

It's set to be a cracker as the Saints look to make it three consecutive domestic Cups on the spin, but Ange Postecoglou 's men are hell-bent on putting last season behind them.

We've asked our Record Sport writers for their picks ahead of the big one.

Michael Gannon

The first goal will be crucial. If Saints get in front they’ll take some shifting.

But it’ll be a fast start from Celts and they will have enough to nudge out the holders.

Celtic 2 St Johnstone 1

Scott Burns

I fear this is the time where St Johnstone will lose their grip on the League Cup and Callum Davidson will suffer his first domestic cup defeat as boss.

Saints will make it difficult for Celtic but I just think with the form of Jota and Kyogo Furuhashi, it should see Ange Postecglou through to his first cup final in Scotland.

Celtic 2 St Johnstone 0

Andy Newport

Callum Davidson's Saints ruled the roost at Hampden last year but the cup double winners have struggled to get going this year, with four wins in 19 games so far.

Celtic, meanwhile, are gathering momentum under Ange Postecoglou and should march on to the Aussie's first final as boss.

Celtic 2 St Johnstone 0

Fraser Wilson

This is going to be very, very close. Nobody needs reminding of Saints' incredible record on the huge Hampden surface. But the loss of Jason Kerr and Ali McCann together with injured duo Glenn Middleton and Stevie May has damaged the Perth side and Celtic's freeflowing forward line will take advantage .. eventually.

Celtic 3 St Johnstone 1 (aet)

Graeme Young

Celtic have won 12 straight at Hampden and have controlled the vast majority of those en route to their quadruple Treble. But Callum Davidson and his seasoned Saints will pose questions Ange Postecoglou''s side will have to answer if they are to return again next month.

The wide open pitch at the national stadium appears a perfect fit for Celtic but St Johnstone also feel at home in Mount Florida and never looked like losing there during their glory double Cup triumph last season.

Celtic will have a fight to the end but they will just edge it with some late magic.

Celtic 2 St Johnstone 1

Steven Mair

Perennially underestimated St Johnstone have made a habit of upsetting the odds. But I can’t see any way past a routine win for Ange Postecoglou on an expansive Hampden pitch, against a side whom Celtic have dished out plenty of batterings to even at their worst. Ange will get his first shot at Scottish silver next month.

Celtic 3 St Johnstone 0

Mark Pirie

After the highs of last season, it’s been a sluggish start to the new campaign for St Johnstone. While it’s hard to go against Callum Davidson’s cup specialist,

Celtic appear to be building momentum and a slip up at Hampden would be a major blow to the Ange Postecoglou revolution. There will be goals, and probably one from Shaun Rooney, but the men from Glasgow’s east end will book a spot in the Premier Sports Cup Final.
