Who will be Vikings breakout player in 2019?

One of the most impressive players in 2019 preseason has been Vikings running back Mike Boone.

Boone is currently fighting for the team’s RB3 spot with Ameer Abdullah. In preseason, Boone did about as well as he could have, running 41 times for 196 yards (4.8 ypc) and two touchdowns. He also caught three passes for 57 yards.

ESPN’s Courtney Cronin pegged Boone as the Vikings breakout candidate for the 2019 season.

More from Cronin:

Boone’s skill set more closely mirrors Dalvin Cook’s than that of Alexander Mattison, who is locked into the No. 2 job right now, and Boone’s ability to break off big runs in the open field and his skills as a pass-catching back will only help his case as the Vikings determine how many backs they’ll keep.

This is an intersting pick. I’m not sure if Boone is a roster lock, but he’s probably pretty close.

One thing is for sure. The Vikings are going to run the ball more, and Boone has proven in preseason that he’s a good runner. We’ll see if he gets an opportunity in the regular season.
