Who was the greatest draft steal in Chiefs history?

Who was the greatest draft steal in Chiefs history?

With the 2019 NFL draft just around the corner, Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire wrote about the greatest draft steals for each team throughout NFL history. For the Chiefs he highlighted former Nebraska Cornhusker and NFL Hall of Fame guard Will Shields. Here is what he had to say about Shields:

“When the Chiefs took Shields in the third round of the 1993 draft out of Nebraska, they didn’t expect to get one of the best offensive linemen of his generation, but that’s exactly what happened. An ironman who didn’t miss a start from 1994 through the end of his career in 2006, Shields made 12 Pro Bowls and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015.”

Will Shields had extraordinary talent, and sometimes draft position can’t hold down greatness. The accolades that he achieved in his lengthy NFL career certainly show it. For instance, Shields has the most starts with the Chiefs of any third-round pick in team history.

The Chiefs certainly have a strong history of grabbing steals in the third round of the draft, though. Even in recent history you’ve got a handful of running backs, Travis Kelce, Justin Houston, Allen Bailey, Dustin Colquitt. Then you go back even further and you have players like Tamarick Vanover, Lake Dawson, Albert Lewis, Henry Marshall. There are arguments that could be made for each of these players. They could also be made for players who’ve been selected by the Chiefs in each round of the draft.

So what do you think Chiefs Kingdom? Is Will Shields the greatest draft steal in Chiefs history? Let us know your thoughts on Facebook and Twitter.
