Who was Stephen Lawrence and what happened to him?

The first episode of ITV's Stephen is set to premiere on August 30.

The three part season, which was co-written by Frank Cottrell-Boyce, is a follow-up to the network's landmark drama, The Murder of Stephen Lawrence - which originally aired in 1999.

The show is based on the real-life events of Stephen Lawrence's murder - who was killed in a racially motivated attack in 1993.

The original investigation failed to convict those responsible - and the new show will portray Doreen and Neville Lawrence's extraordinary campaign for justice in 2006.

Steve Coogan will play DCI Clive Driscoll, who led the investigation that saw two of the killers finally convicted of murder 18 years later.

Ahead of the show starting, we have taken a look at what happened to Stephen Lawrence and the impact his case had on UK society.

Who was Stephen Lawrence and what happened to him?

Stephen Lawrence was a black teenager who grew up in South East London with his two parents, his brother Stuart and sister Georgina.

When he was 18-years-old, the A-Level student was killed in a racially motivated attack on the evening of 22 April 1993 while he was waiting for the bus with his friend.

Five suspects were charged with Stephen's murder, but the charges were dropped before a trial could happen.

Stephen's parents knew the identity of their son's killers and their efforts led to a public inquiry which branded the Metropolitan Police institutionally racist - before the killers were eventually convicted in 2012.

The impact of the Stephen Lawrence case

The Stephen Lawrence case and the result of the public inquiry hugely shifted attitudes towards race in the UK.

The inquiry published as the Macpherson Report has been called ‘one of the most important moments in the modern history of criminal justice in Britain’. - Stephen's Dad said it 'opened up the country's eyes' to racism in Britain.

The case caught the attention of important cultural figures such as Nelson Mandela who met with Stephen's family and urged the police to do more to capture Stephen's killers during the initial investigation.

Stephen Lawrence Day was officially launched in 2019 on the the anniversary of his death as a celebration of his life and his legacy in shifting race relations in the UK.
