Who was Sam Maguire? Everything you need to know ahead of Mayo vs Tyrone All-Ireland final

Mayo and Tyrone will battle for the Sam Maguire this Saturday in the All-Ireland football final in Croke Park.

Everybody knows the Sam Maguire trophy but who exactly is Sam Maguire and why is it named after him.

Samuel "Sam" Maguire was an Irish republican and gaelic footballer.

Born in west Cork in 1887, Maguire was a Protestant and joined the British Army in London when he was 20.

He joined and captained the hugely successful London Hibernians team that made it to many All-Ireland finals in the early 1900's.

In 1907 he went into the administration in London GAA becoming the chairman and a delegate to the GAA's Annual Congress.

Funnily enough, the vice chairman of the London county board was Liam McCarthy, who has the hurling cup called after him.

Maguire later got a job in the Irish civil service but was dimissed.

According to Margaret Walsh who wrote the book "Sam Maguire: The Enigmatic Man Behind Ireland's Most Prestigious Trophy", he was sacked and deprived of a pension in 1924.

He returned to live in Cork in 1925 where he developed TB and died at the age of 49 in 1927.

He is buried in the cemetery of Saint Mary's in Dunmanway.

The Sam Maguire Cup was designed and presented to the GAA in 1928 in his honour.

It was made by silversmith Matthew J. Staunton of D'Olier Street, Dublin.

Kildare were the first team to win the trophy in 1928 while it was in fact replaced by a newer model in 1988.
