Who was Jiang Xiaorou and why was she famous?

Jiang Xiaorou, whose online persona was known as “Jiang Xiaorou Ya”, became recognised for content that deliberately pushed the boundaries of paranormal exploration. Her videos focused on abandoned places, supernatural claims and traditional taboos.

Rather than simply discussing whether supernatural beliefs were real, she often presented herself as the person willing to test them. That approach helped her attract a substantial audience on Douyin, China's major short-video platform.

Her content also made her controversial. One of the most widely discussed episodes came in 2025, when she filmed herself smashing a Guanyin statue with a hammer as part of an anti-superstition challenge. Reports say she was attempting to challenge the idea that disrespecting religious objects would lead to supernatural consequences.
