Who was golfing great Max Faulkner?

The Open Championship may be in its 148th year, but only once before has it been held outside England or Scotland.

And that time, it was at Royal Portrush, the same venue as this year.

Back in 1951, it was Englishman Max Faulkner who took the title, shooting 71-70-70 to build a six-stroke lead through 54 holes.

He finished the championship at three under par, two shots clear of Antonio Cerda from Argentina., and was the last Englishman to win The Open until Tony Jacklin in 1969.

Faulkner is credited with 19 professional titles, and his one and only major.

He also finished in the top 10 at The Open on four other occasions.

As well as his victory at the British Open, he was twice runner up at the Irish Open in Portrush.

Faulkner, whose father was a professional golfer before him, received an OBE for services to golf in 2001 and died four years later aged 88.
