Franco Baresi, the AC Milan captain and Italy World Cup winner who is widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders the sport has ever produced, passed away on 31 July 2026. He was 66.

AC Milan announced his death on X, with a statement that read: "The entire history of AC Milan is in tears following the passing of Franco Baresi. His example and integrity will be forever etched into the Club's DNA, just as his iconic number 6 shirt is."
