Who was at Meghan Markle's birth? Baby Sussex greeted by Prince Harry and Doria Ragland

Meghan Markle once again turned royal tradition on its head as she gave birth to her and Prince Harry's first royal baby .

Baby Sussex - a little boy weighing 7lb 3oz - arrived this morning at 5.26am, and his proud parents have already spent several hours cuddling him and getting used to their new parenthood status.

But while Meghan and Harry have been careful to adhere to just enough royal protocols to give older members of the family peace of mind, there's one modern tradition they wanted to bring in: having the father at the birth.

Meghan gave birth at home with her husband of 11 months by her side, in what he described as an "amazing" experience.

Appearing outside Frogmore Cottage in the grounds of Windsor Castle, where the pair moved to earlier this year, Harry beamed as he announced his unnamed son's birth.

"Meghan and myself had a baby boy this morning, mother and baby are doing incredibly well," he revealed.

"It's been the most amazing experience I could ever have possibly imagined - how any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension," he went on.

"But we're both absolutely thrilled and so grateful for all the love and support out there. Still thinking about names, baby's a bit overdue so we've had time to think about it."

In the official statement from the Royal Family, Meghan and Harry hinted that her mother, Doria Ragland, had also been by her daughter's side as she laboured.

"Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex was safely delivered of a son at 0526hrs," said Buckingham Palace's statement.

"The baby weighs 7lbs 3oz. The Duke of Sussex was present for the birth.

"The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Lady Jane Fellowes, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Earl Spencer have been informed and are delighted with the news."

Has Prince Harry just given a major clue about the royal baby's name?

It added: "The Duchess's mother, Doria Ragland, who is overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild, is with Their Royal Highnesses at Frogmore Cottage.

"Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well."

The Sussexes first announced the news on their Instagram , which has only been up and running for a few weeks but already has nearly six million followers.

Against a blue background, the pair had written: "It's a boy!"
