Who Wants to be a Millionaire player’s Phone a Friend hangs up on him in ‘show first’

A Who Wants to be a Millionaire player made show history on Wednesday as he became the first contestant ever to be hung up on by his Phone a Friend.

Saul Sylvester, 27, phoned a friend to help him on a question he was unsure on as host Jeremy Clarkson pondered along with him.

The question was: "Which poet famously wrote 'Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all'?"

The answer options were A) William Blake, B) John Keats, C) Alfred, Lord Tennyson or D) Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Saul opted to call his friend Chris, who immediately told him the answer was C.

He answered with several seconds to spare of the 30 players are allocated to get an answer from their pal.

Jeremy said: "You've got 13 seconds left, do you want to have a chat?"

Saul asked Chris: "How you doing?" but a hanging up tone was then heard in the studio.

"He hung up!" exclaimed Saul, laughing.

"What a good friend, 'Lord Tennyson, bye!' replied Jeremy.

But Chris did help Saul as he was correct and helped Saul get through to the next round, thought Saul lost out just a couple of questions later.

One viewer tweeted: "I can't believe that a Phone A Friend had just hung up on the phone. That's the first time that's ever happened in @MillionaireUK history. LOL #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire".

Another added: "Feel like Saul’s ‘phone a friend’ just hung up to replicate a Mic drop. @MillionaireUK #itv #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire".

"Even his mates hang up on him. #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire," joked a third.

Meanwhile, Jeremy's reaction to Saul's first Phone a Friend had viewers ranting that he was being rude.

Jeremy asked Saul's friend Mike how he was, and Mike began to answer before Jeremy cut him off and said: “I’m not that bothered.”

"A bore is someone who actually tells you how they are when you ask."

“@JeremyClarkson ‘a bore is someone when asked how they are, they tell you!’ I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone as a presenter be so dismissive and rude! #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire learn some manners!”

Another added: “Clarkson calling the guy he’s rang a bore within the first few seconds is bold. #wwtbam #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire.”

* Who Wants to be a Millionaire airs this week on ITV at 9pm
