Who Wants to be a Millionaire gives out whopping £250k as player walks away in tense standoff

Who Wants to be a Millionaire has given out a quarter of a million pounds in the second episode of its brand new series.

Callum Hines, from Glasgow, carried on his game play from the night before where he had run out of time.

On the half a million pound question, Callum decided to call his friend David.

Host Jeremy Clarkson made the call and explained to a nervous David that Callum was pondering over the half a million pound question.

Jeremy admitted he could not help Callum with the question (ITV)

It was: "In 1930, who became the first non-American to be named Man of the Year by TIME magazine?"

The answer options were A) Joseph Stalin, B) Albert Einstein, C) Mahatma Ghandi, and D) Halle Selassie.

The correct answer was C, Ghandi, but David was unsure and Callum decided he was not going to even attempt to answer the question, but instead to home with his quarter of a million.

But Jeremy reminded him he still had one lifeline left - Ask The Host, the new lifeline awarded to contestants as there is no longer an Ask The Audience lifeline because there is no live studio audience any more.

And so Callum revealed he had actually forgotten he still had that lifeline left, and asked Jeremy to step in to help him.

Unfortunately, Jeremy was utterly clueless and could not even venture a guess for Callum for fear he would lose him all his winnings.

So the savvy contestant decided to leave with the £250,000 - a prize certainly not to be sniffed at.

Who Wants to be a Millionaire will crown its first winner of the £1million jackpot this series, but who will it be?

* Who Wants to be a Millionaire continues Wednesday at 9pm on ITV
