Who Wants to Be a Millionaire fans argue chess question is 'wrong'

A Who Wants to be a Millionaire fans argued online about the answers given to a question about chess.

Host Jeremy Clarkson was walking contestants the questions in order to help them to £1m.

But one question caused a bit of debate online.

The question asked: "How many possible opening moves are there for a player in a game of chess?"

The answers were A. 8, B. 12, C. 16 or D. 20?

Regular chess players would quickly float over to D. 20 - the eight white pawns, as white plays first, forward either one or two spaces or the two knights each have two moves they could make.

But a disagreement erupted on Twitter when someone tweeted: "When @ITV #whowantstobeamillionaire don't even give you the correct answer as an option."

They had decided to suggest that the two moves each pawn and knight can make should only be counted as one making the answer 10.

Many pointed it out that was wrong, one person did have another answer.

Some believe there are actually 21 opening moves in a game of chess - if the white player count 'resigning' as a move.

Avid chess players could easily mull over the question for hours, but for those who only have a passing interest, the accepted answer on Who Wants to be a Millionaire is 20.

*Who Wants to Be a Millionaire is on ITV1 Saturdays from 9pm or available on ITV Player
