Who Wants to be a Millionaire contestant loses out after trusting friend

A Bristol University medical student won enough money to pay her tuition fees on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

Mainga Bhima from Rossendale was the last contestant to take the chair on tonight's (February 7) episode of the quiz show.

She was the fourth female contestant today, two of whom crashed out of the show with £1,000.

Mainga got off to a great start, answering questions about the Galápagos Islands and the KGB (with a helping hand from host Jeremy Clarkson).

She couldn't believe her luck when a question came up asking about the merger between Penguin and Random house - which happened while she worked at the publisher in 2013.

Asked how she would spend the money, Jeremy and Mainga joked about her buying a private island before the host pointed out she may want to put it towards her tuition fees - which she agreed to.

She then set her safety net at £64,000 and faced a question for £125,000.

At this point Mainga faltered, when asked a question about sport.

The question was: "Which athlete has not achieved the triple of a knighthood, being Team GB's Olympic flag bearer and winning BBC Sports Personality of the Year?"

Her options were Bradley Wiggins, Steve Redgrave, Andy Murray and Chris Hoy.

Stumped, Mainga decided to phone friend Sam - who said the answer was Andy Murray. The student still had another phone a friend lifeline to use - but decided to take Sam's word.

Unfortunately, the answer was Bradley Wiggins - meaning Mainga didn't go any further in the competition.

However, after making the smart decision to set her safety net- it meant she didn't lose any money and still walked away with a huge £64,000.
