Who Wants to Be a Millionaire contestant crumbles over £1million question

A Who Wants to Be a Millionaire contestant crumbled under the pressure, losing out on £1million.

Viewers had an inkling that Andrew Townsley, from Glasgow, would reach the million pound question with ease.

The retired doctor made it to £64,000 without using any lifelines, leaving host Jeremy Clarkson speechless.

Jeremy asked him the crucial million pound question: "In the history of motor sport, which of these iconic races was held first?"

The options were A) Le Mans 24 hours B) Monaco Grand Prix C) Indy 500 or D) Isle of Man TT

Pondering over the answer, Andrew decided to phone his friend Elsa.

But she didn't know either, which left Andrew with a difficult decision.

He decided to take the money instead, meaning he had won £500k.

However, Jeremy asked him theoretically what would he have chosen.

Andrew said the Isle of Man TT, which proved to be the correct answer.

Andrew said he would spend his prize money on a trip to Niagara Falls in Canada.

Prior to the broadcast, Andrew said: "It felt great to be there, if a bit surreal to be honest.

"As I was progressing in the hot seat, all I could think about was this is all going very quickly.

"When you apply to be on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? you always dream that you'd have the opportunity to answer that million pound question...

"I knew winning a large sum of money would make my life a lot more comfortable."

The last person to win the £1million jackpot was Ingram Wilcox in 2006.
