'Who wants some?' - Sunday League footballer convicted after punching player in friendly match

A Sunday League match turned sour after a late tackle turned into a brawl between two teams.

Strelley FC player Tyrone Spencer was convicted on March 23 after punching an opposition player breaking his cheekbone.

The 24-year-old, of Beechdale Road, received a suspended imprisonment eight months suspended for 24 months.

The game between Borussia TNF and Strelley FC on January 12, 2019, was abandoned after a late tackle turned into a fight between the two teams.

The match was approaching half-time when the atmosphere turned sour. An initial late tackle was followed by a tussle took between two players, Nottinghamshire Police said.

Spencer was placed in a headlock, with both teams crowding round arguing between each other. The group finally dispersed, before Spencer ran 7-8 metres down the pitch and punched the victim in the face.

He then attempted to punch another two players shouting "who wants some?", before being dragged away by his teammates and he was given a red card.

The victim suffered three fractures to his left cheekbone and the friendly match was abandoned.

Detective Constable Talissa Northedge who led the investigation said: "This was an unprovoked attack after a late challenge in a friendly.

"No one should suffer injuries in this manner during any kind of sporting match.

"The investigation into this assault demonstrates that this kind of aggression and thuggery during sporting fixtures will not be tolerated by Nottinghamshire Police."
