Who to stop it? Scramble to prevent all-out war in the Middle East

THE DEBATE © FRANCE 24

As tension over Jerusalem continues to spiral, neighbours like Egypt and Qatar are attempting to broker a truce. The current crisis, which now includes Israeli Arabs protesting, is also a reminder of how much has changed since the last time Israel and Gaza fought a war in 2014.

Under Donald Trump, the White House gave Benjamin Netanyahu all he wished for, from the recognition of Jerusalem as capital and the pulling of international aid for Palestinians to brokering the normalisation of ties with Arab states – states who all insisted they were not betraying the Palestinian cause.

Enter Joe Biden. We ask about the new administration's measured response to the current escalation. What can Washington do? What do Americans want? And what's the US role in breaking the endless cycle of war and resentment in the Middle East?

Produced by Charles Wente, Juliette Laurain and Imen Mellaz.
