Who sings the season six Outlander theme? And why did it change?

It's one of the most instantly recognisable theme tunes for any TV show around.

The Skye Boat Song has introduced fans to Outlander for six seasons.

One of Scotland's most famous traditional songs, showrunner Ronald D. Moore and composer Bear McReary sought it out as their choice for the show.

To make it an even more perfect fit, Ron decided that one lyric would have to be changed so "lad that is gone" became "lass that is gone" and the rest they say is history.

That was up until this latest season, when showrunners not only changed it back to lad but also added a male voice to sing along with the female lead used in the previous five seasons.

But why was the change made and who is the new singer?

Every season 'The Skye Boat Song' changes slightly, from the original version in season 1 to the French verse in season 2, and the choir in season 5, the theme has reflected the location of the show.

Outlander season six has finally hit or screens (Starz)

Each season has been sung by Bear's wife Raya Yarborough, and this season, she has been joined by male singer, Scottish Gaelic poet, and musician Griogair Labhruidh.

But why the change in lyrics back to "lad"? We know the "lass" of the previous version was Claire so will the lad who goes this season be Jamie? Time will tell.

The reaction by fans to the new theme has been mixed, to say the least.

Reddit user rainewoman said: "If they were going to do a duet they should have had the female voice first and stuck with “lass” then had the male join later.

"That’s the signature line of the show. I really don’t like the new beginning. The rest of the song was ok."

While another added: "I don't really like this one at all... I have otherwise loved each season's version and during season 5, I rarely skipped the intro because I loved the theme so much! That's not going to happen next season."

Not everyone disliked it though.

Reddit user carbrzk0115 added: "The male voice threw me at first, but I actually really really love the duet! I think it’s lovely, but apparently, I’m in the minority. The title sequence seems to hint at a darker tone this season and I’m here for it!"
