This week we’re celebrating Malorie Blackman’s reign as the eighth children’s laureate and looking ahead to next week when the brand spanking new laureate is announced on Tuesday.
We asked Malorie what it was like being children’s laureate for the past two years and what advice she would give to the next one - read all her answers here. We’re also going to be testing YOU on your knowledge of marvellous Malorie - try our quiz tomorrow!
Every laureate has their areas of special interest. Malorie Blackman pledged to get “more children reading more” and she started the amazing Young Adult Literary Convention (Yalc) event, which is on for the second year running next month (read about the fabulous line-up). Before Malorie, Julia Donaldson brought more drama and music into schools and supported libraries, embarking on a huge Land’s End to John O’Groats library tour.
Previous laureates include Jacqueline Wilson, Michael Rosen and Quentin Blake. The laureateship was dreamed up by the late poet laureate Ted Hughes and Michael Morpurgo to mark a lifetime’s contribution to children’s literature and highlight the importance of children’s books.
Who would you like to see as the new children’s laureate? And what would you like to see them do and focus on?

@EmilyDrabs @GdnChildrensBks Someone who will champion non-fiction children's books as much as fiction and 'diversity of content' generally.

@Elli_fant @EmilyDrabs @GdnChildrensBks Whoever it is, I'm so glad the Laureateship exists, and children's books always have a champion!

@EmilyDrabs @GdnChildrensBks I hope that whoever it is will give some support and publicity to the #PicturesMeanBusiness campaign.

@EmilyDrabs @GdnChildrensBks How about either @whatSFSaid or @jabberworks? They'd both bring huge dynamism to the role.
