Who's next at Chelsea? How the contenders compare - in pictures

New Chelsea Boss: Guus Hiddink
Guus Hiddink
Is he available? Contracted to Turkey & may be difficult for him to leave before their Euro 2012 qualification campaign ends in October What's his style? Has always been willing to adapt tactics to suit the quality of players at his disposal, but his teams are invariably close-knit, driven & successful Would Roman approve? Oh yes. He bankrolled Hiddink’s time in Russia & hired the Dutchman as Chelsea’s interim manager in 2009 Has he worked for an Abramovich type? The man himself, for Russia & Chelsea, so knows the owner’s lust for trophies Can he generate immediate success? Yes. Steadied the ship after Luiz Felipe Scolari’s departure & lost only one match in his time at Stamford Bridge What are his chances of getting the job? Most likely to return in an advisory or technical director role to a younger manager

New Chelsea Boss: Marco van Basten
Marco van Basten
Is he available? Reports in Portugal say he's been lined up to take over at Sporting next season but Dutch media have suggested he could return to Ajax What's his style? Unafraid, big egos don’t faze him. When Holland boss he dropped names such as Seedorf, Davids & Van Nistelrooy Would Roman approve? Van Basten can stand up to the dressing-room dukes but that also makes him the type of manager who would not hesitate to drop Fernando Torres – not the sort of action to curry favour with his boss Has he worked for an Abramovich type? No Can he generate immediate success? Track record suggests not. Lost in last 16 of 2006 World Cup & last 8 of Euro 2008, then failed to qualify for the Champions League at Ajax What are his chances of getting the job? Hiddink may like working with him but his pedigree is lacking

New Chelsea Boss: Porto coach Andre Villas Boas
André Villas Boas
Is he available? Contracted to Porto until 2013 but a big move could lure him away sooner What's his style? At 33 is the youngest boss in the Portuguese league & won the title in his first season at Porto Would Roman approve? Of his 4-3-3 formation, his dynamic pressing style & the quick success – yes. Of his inexperience – no Has he worked for an Abramovich type? Coached at Chelsea under Mourinho, but has no experience at managerial level of dealing with an oligarch’s demands Can he generate immediate success? Definitely. Porto were 3rd in the league last season but under him they won the title with 5 games to spare & are in the Europa League final What are his chances of getting the job? His inexperience would count against him but he would be more viable if recruited alongside a Hiddink-type character

Chelsea managers?: Fulham manager Mark Hughes
Mark HughesIs he available? Contracted at Fulham until the end of next season but he is keen to discuss a new deal What's his style? His route one approach was unloved at Manchester City & his reign ended after less than 18 months Would Roman approve? Hughes’s penchant for wingers would go down well but he would need to produce a more expansive game to satisfy Abramovich Has he worked for an Abramovich type? City’s owners in Abu Dhabi demanded success and his desire for patience got short shrift from them Can he generate immediate success? Wales & Blackburn were transformed under him but the teams took time to build. At City progress was steady not spectacular What are his chances of getting the job? Ex-players are always popular but his turbulent City experience could count against him Photograph: Phil Cole/Getty Images
Chelsea managers?: Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp
Harry Redknapp
Is he available? Contracted to Spurs until 2013 What's his style? Lovable wheeler-dealer persona that many feel masks a tactically astute brain Would Roman approve? Abramovich likes free-flowing football but only when it produces the right result Has he worked for an Abramovich type? Has worked with his share of colourful owners and chairmen but not in the Russian’s high-rolling league Can he generate immediate success? Spurs have been transformed under him but after nearly 30 years in management he still has only one major trophy to his name What are his chances of getting the job? Success at Spurs & knowledge of the game are alluring but the inexperience in Europe plus the swirl of unproven & always denied corruption allegations that have dogged him, may count against him

New Chelsea Boss: Carlo Ancelotti
Carlo Ancelotti
Is he available? Ready & willing to carry on in the job but accepts his fate is out of his control What's his style? Refreshingly attack-minded – Chelsea scored club-record 103 goals in his first season in charge. But his genial nature has been questioned this season Would Roman approve? Only when it wins the Double Has he worked for an Abramovich type? Ancelotti spent 8 years at Milan with Silvio Berlusconi sniping from the sidelines – but he stayed and won the Champions League twice. It was precisely this European pedigree that attracted Abramovich to sign the Italian in the first place Can he generate immediate success? Did the Double in his first season at Chelsea but that has been quickly forgotten amid the disappointment of a trophyless campaign this time round What are his chances of getting the job? Slim
