Who's cheapest for basics like bread, butter, beans and tea? We shopped at six big supermarkets to find out

There's no doubt about it, the price of shopping is rising.

Essentials like bread, butter and teabags are all on the rise at a time when utility bills are increasing too.

So can you save money by shopping around?

We bought the same five products from six different supermarkets to see what the difference is in price.

And we found there was almost a 20% price hike from the cheapest to the most expensive.

We bought each store's own brand of butter, a Warburtons Toastie loaf, a four-pack of Heinz baked beans, six large eggs and a 240-pack of Tetley teabags from each supermarket - Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Asda, Aldi and Lidl.

Budget retailers Lidl and Aldi were joint cheapest, at £9.55 for the shopping basket.

Tesco was the next closest at £9.82, followed by Sainsbury's at £10.08 and Asda at £10.25.

The most expensive was Morrisons, at £11.43 - 19.6% more than Aldi and Lidl.

Some products were exactly the same in price no matter where we shopped, the Warbies loaf for instance at £1.10 across the board and butter £1.48 everywhere and just a penny more at Morrisons.

There's been a noticeable increase in beans recently and we reported last month how the boss of Kraft Heinz warned that consumers will have to get used to higher food prices with his company - the world’s fifth-largest food and drink firm – 'raising prices, where necessary, around the world'.

It wasn't that long ago when you could pick up a four-pack of Heinz beans for £2.

Morrisons' four-pack of Heinz beans was the most expensive at £3.50, but they also had a six-pack on offer for the same price (Manchester Family / MEN)

Now the cheapest seems to be £2.49 - almost a 25% increase.

That's the price in Lidl and Aldi, although Aldi didn't even have them in stock when we visited two separate stores so we factored in the cost anyway.

Tesco and Asda are similar, at £2.50 for four, whereas Sainsbury's price was £3 and Morrisons' even more at £3.50.

Rather bizarrely they did have a six-pack on sale for the same price though, so most people would surely opt for that.

The cost of teabags varied the most, with Morrisons selling a 240-pack of Tetley for £4.25 - although the usual shelf price said £5 (Manchester Family / MEN)

Eggs varied from 99p for six, up to £1.25 in Tesco, and £1.50 in Sainsbury's, but the latter's were extra large rather than large.

It was the teabags that seemed to vary the most though - the cheapest being £3 at Sainsbury's, but that was only because of a current offer reducing them from the usual £4.

Aldi, Lidl and Tesco all had them on sale for £3.49, while Asda was higher at £4.08 and Morrisons the most expensive at £4.25 - and that was reduced from the usual £5 price shelf.

The most expensive shop cost a fifth more than the cheapest (Manchester Family / MEN)

A spokesperson for Morrisons said: "This is a basket of five items and not representative of our prices across our shop. Aside from the branded bread, tea and beans products, we have cheaper own brand eggs and butter which could have been selected."
