Who Rangers could face in Europa League knockout playoff as Barcelona and Dortmund lie in wait

Giovanni van Bronckhorst was used to glamour when it came to his illustrious playing career.

And now the Champions League winner and World Cup final captain can look forward to the same early in his Rangers reign.

The Dutchman got off to the perfect start in the Ibrox dug-out as he secured a place in the Europa League knockout stage with a 2-0 win over Sparta Prague.

It’s the third season on the trot the Light Blues have achieved that after Steven Gerrard’s two successful attempts.

But when Rangers name is in the hat in Nyon on December 13 the format of the draw will be slightly different than in previous seasons.

It was the last-32 but this season UEFA have changed it up a but with the Light Blues entering into the knockout play-off round.

Rangers will be one of 16 teams in that which consists of the eight Europa League group runners-up as well as eight third-placed Champions League teams.

That makes it quite the task for Van Bronckhorst to reach the last 16 as they could face one of the real continent’s heavyweights.

However, as a player he helped stun Parma in one of the club’s most memorable results in Europe and fans will be dreaming of a glamour tie.

Here, Record Sport looks at the state of play in each of the eight Champions League group to see who has finished third or is likely to drop into the Europa League

GROUP A

RB Leipzig/Club Brugge

The two sides are locked on four points with the Germans ahead on goal difference but they host Manchester City while Jack Hendry’s Belgian side face a daunting task against PSG.

GROUP B

AC Milan/Atletico Madrid/Porto

On paper this would be one of the most difficult ties but in terms of glamour it would be a huge occasion. The two Euro giants are tied on four points with the Italians hosting Liverpool and the Spaniards and the Portuguese going head to head.

GROUP C

Borussia Dortmund

Giovanni van Bronckhorst helped Rangers to a 2-0 win over the Germans 22 years ago to the day of his Ibrox dug-out debut and could face the mighty Germans again.

GROUP D

Sheriff Tiraspol

This would be the least glamorous but the best in terms of chances of progressing, although the Moldovan shock troops might fancy their chances after their stunning season in Europe.

GROUP E

Barcelona/Benfica

If ever a potential tie screamed Champions League in all but name the this would be it as the two former European champions battle it out for second and third place and the Catalans would be a special tie for van Bronckhorst after he won football's biggest club prize with them.

GROUP F

Villarreal/Atalanta/Young Boys

Rangers have faced the Spanish side a couple of times so know what to expect while the others would provide a tough test. Atalanta, in particular, would be a tough nut to crack.

But these three clashes offer the chance to enjoy an exciting continental adventure.

GROUP G

Red Bull Salzburg/Seville

Rangers faced the Spaniards in the Champions League a decade ago and would be one of the hardest ties, as would the Austrians.

GROUP H

Zenit St Petersburg

This would be an interesting one and the chance for a bit of revenge after that UEFA Cup final defeat to the Russians in Manchester in 2008.
