Who played Ted in Coronation Street? Comedy star's past and relation to Cobbles icon

Coronation Street fans were thrilled when they recognised the newcomer in last night's double header.

Monday's episodes of the long-running soap continued to explore the aftermath of Emma Brooker's split from Curtis Delamere.

The character played by Alexandra Mardell was being driven home by her friend Faye after a boozy New Year's Eve party when they accidentally ran over Ted.

Emma and Faye were initially relieved when Ted was seemingly unharmed from his injuries and invited them to his flat for a brew.

However, they discovered he had died from his injuries when they returned to check up on him later on in the episode.

Ted's stint on Weatherfield proved to be short-lived, but fans following the show on Twitter were gobsmacked as they recognised he was played by English comedian Duggie Brown.

Who is Duggie Brown?

The 81-year-old is a famous stand-up from Yorkshire who shot to stardom in the 70s with his appearances on Granada's popular show The Comedians.

The programme ran from 1971 - 1993 and gave platforms to established comics such as Les Dennis and Stan Boardman.

Duggie's first role was in the iconic Ken Loach film Kes when he played a milkman. His sister Lynne Perrie also appeared in the film as Mrs Casper and will be best known to Corrie fans for her role as Ivy Tilsley.

Ivy is one of Weatherfield's most famous residents and played a key role in some of the most dramatic stories on the Cobbles from 1971 - 1994.

Last night's double header was not the first time Duggie has appeared in Coronation Street as he played George Freeman in 1997 before returning to the soap in 2004 as Bernie Cooper.

The comic has built up an extensive catalogue of TV appearances and has also featured in episodes of Emmerdale, EastEnders and The Bill.

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday on ITV and ITV Hub
