Who owns Chelsea and how much are they worth as Liverpool secure £538.6m investment

Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group have announced that the investment firm Red Bird Capital has bought a £538.6million stake in their group, leading to hopes that the outgoing Premier League champions can move the needle in terms of their ability to financially compete with the country’s other big hitters.

But what does it mean for Chelsea's financial standing?

Here football.london breaks down the numbers and compares the clubs and their owners.

Who owns Chelsea?

The club has been owned by Russian businessman Roman Abramovich since the summer of 2003.

How much is Roman Abramovich worth?

Forbes estimates that Abramovich is worth £10.5billion.

By comparison the £538.6million Red Bird investment is for a 10% stake of FSG, which means the company behind Liverpool is valued at £5.38billion.

What are his others business interests?

There are many but Abramovich initially made his money through oil and has since invested significant amounts in the worlds of art, aviation and technology.

What about the club’s value?

The most recent Forbes evaluation, from May 2019, says Chelsea are valued at £1.8billion but that figure is certain to have changed in the two years since owing to a lack of Champions League football and the coronavirus pandemic.

Deloitte placed the West London club eighth in their latest Money League, the top-ranked side in London and fourth in England.

And their revenue?

The club's latest accounts, to the end of May last year, showed that all three revenue streams took a hit as a result of the pandemic but their income from broadcasting, commercial and matchday amounted to £407.4million.
