WASHINGTON _ Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions' being floated as a potential member of Donald Trump's administration is leading to names floating about as possible successors.
Sessions is most mentioned as a possible pick for attorney general and secretary of Defense. If he takes one of the posts, Gov. Robert Bentley would appoint his replacement.
In a column for AL.com, Cameron Smith, state programs director for Washington think tank R Street Institute, suggests state Sens. Trip Pittman, who is budget chairman in the Alabama state Senate, and Cam Ward, though Ward was arrested for driving under the influence in 2015.
Rep. Mo Brooks told AL.com said he would ask Bentley to be considered if Sessions leaves the Senate and if the senator doesn't have a preference for his replacement.
Like Sessions, Brooks is known for inflammatory rhetoric on immigration. In 2014 when migrant children arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border, he said immigrants see the U.S. as "their sugar daddy" because of government handouts from President Barack Obama.
Another potential replacement would be Rep. Martha Roby. But Roby criticized Trump toward the end of the campaign after comments were released of Trump alluding to being able to grope women and said he should step aside.
Roby apparently suffered for her comments about Trump, barely winning her re-election bid and sparking speculation about a primary challenge in 2018.
