Jackman earlier this year was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for eminent service to the performing arts as an acclaimed actor and performer, and to the global community, particularly as an advocate for poverty eradication.

It is the highest level of the Order of Australia.

New Governor-General General David Hurley presented the awards to Jackman and other recipients on Friday morning.

Jackman was seen dining at Aubergine with his wife Deborra-lee Furness on Thursday night.

They are familiar with Canberra as adoptive parents agitating for change to adoption laws in Australia.

Furness founded Adopt Change in 2008 to help children in need be placed in safe, nurturing homes and for adoption laws to be reformed, the organisation saying "adoption in Australia is a lengthy and difficult process" .
