Who is Wesley Fofana? The William Saliba partner who Arsenal hope to sign in the transfer window

Arsenal are eyeing a summer move for Saint-Etienne defender Wesley Fofana, according to reports.

Mikel Arteta currently has a number of centre-back options, but with uncertainty over the future of Shkodran Mustafi and Pablo Mari only on loan until the end of the season, the Gunners could look to revitalise their backline.

And according to French outlet  But! Football Club, via Sport Witness, one player who is on the Gunners' radar is Fofana, who has alerted clubs with his impressive performances in Ligue 1.

The report claims Everton are also interested in signing the 19-year-old, but the player is currently happy to stay at the French club for at least another season before leaving for England, after appreciating the faith shown by his coach Claude Puel.

Here's what you need to know about the highly-rated defender.

Who is he?

Wesley Fofana is a 19-year-old centre-back who came through the youth system at Saint-Etienne.

The defender signed his first professional contract in May 2018 and made his debut for Saint-Etienne in a 3-0 Ligue 1 win over Nice on 18 May 2019.

How has he performed this season?

Fofana has played 14 games for Saint-Etienne this season, scoring one goal.

The French club were 17th in the table when the rest of the Ligue 1 season was cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Connection with Saliba

Fofana's potential arrival at the Emirates would see the teenager reunited with William Saliba, who the teenager has played alongside during the current campaign.

Saliba remained at Saint-Etienne on a season-long loan deal after completing a move to Arsenal last summer.

The Frenchman is a registered Saint-Etienne player until June 30, however,  football.london  understands the teenage defender will not be able to play for Arsenal until next season, even with the Premier League not set to resume until June.
