After intense internal discussions and days of political suspense, the Congress has now officially chosen VD Satheesan as Kerala’s next Chief Minister.
For years, VD Satheesan was known inside Kerala politics as a strong speaker, an aggressive opposition face and a leader popular among Congress workers. But after the Congress-led UDF’s massive 2026 election victory, he is no longer just the party’s attack voice in the Assembly.

The decision marks the biggest moment in Satheesan’s political career — and possibly the biggest generational shift Kerala Congress has seen in years.
Because this was not just a leadership appointment.
It was the Congress eventually backing the man many workers believed had already become the public face of the party in Kerala.
What Is VD Satheesan’s Net Worth?
According to the election affidavit filed ahead of the 2026 Kerala Assembly polls, VD Satheesan and his wife Lakshmipriya together own assets worth over Rs 6.69 crore, including movable and immovable properties. Satheesan declared movable assets worth around Rs 53.82 lakh, while his wife reported movable assets valued at Rs 68.45 lakh.
Their holdings include cash, bank deposits, gold and shares. The Congress leader stated that he owns Rs 64,000 in cash, bank shares worth Rs 25,000 and 35 grams of gold, while his wife owns 1,128 grams of gold. His immovable assets, including land and residential properties in Paravoor and Nettoor, are valued at around Rs 2.42 crore, with his wife also inheriting land worth nearly Rs 1.85 crore.
The affidavit further mentioned that the family owns a car worth Rs 9.61 lakh in their daughter’s name. On the liabilities side, Satheesan declared loans worth around Rs 24 lakh, while his wife reported liabilities of approximately Rs 17.45 lakh.
How did VD Satheesan rise in Kerala politics?
Born in 1964 in Nettoor near Kochi, Satheesan entered politics through the Kerala Students Union (KSU) before gradually moving into the Youth Congress and mainstream party structure.
Unlike many Congress power centres built through Delhi lobbying or factional camps, Satheesan built his image largely through ground-level politics and legislative visibility.
A lawyer by training, he became known inside the Kerala Assembly for his sharp speeches and combative style.
Since 2001, he has continuously represented the Paravur Assembly constituency, slowly building a reputation as one of the Congress’s most vocal leaders in Kerala politics.
But his real political turning point came after defeat — not victory.
Why did VD Satheesan become the face of Congress after 2021?
When the UDF lost the 2021 Kerala Assembly election to the Left Front under Pinarayi Vijayan, the Congress was facing a serious credibility problem in the state.
That was when the party unexpectedly appointed Satheesan as Leader of the Opposition.
At the time, many questioned the decision because he had never served as a minister and lacked administrative experience.
But over the next five years, Satheesan completely reshaped his political image.
He became the Congress’s loudest anti-Left voice, repeatedly attacking the Vijayan government over corruption allegations, governance controversies, financial issues and law-and-order concerns.
Even political opponents privately admitted that he brought aggression and energy back into Kerala Congress politics at a time when the party nationally was struggling to look politically sharp.
Why did Congress finally choose VD Satheesan as Kerala CM?
The biggest reason was simple: he became the face of the UDF campaign.
Throughout the 2026 election battle, Satheesan projected himself as the principal challenger to Pinarayi Vijayan and travelled extensively across Kerala.
When the UDF ended the Left’s decade-long rule with a sweeping victory, many Congress workers believed there was only one natural choice for Chief Minister.
Inside the party, the emotional argument became difficult to ignore:
The leader who fought the battle should lead the government too.
His support from alliance partner IUML also significantly strengthened his position during internal discussions.
At the same time, the delay in announcing the CM revealed how divided the Congress leadership remained behind the scenes.
Why was the Congress leadership divided over the Kerala CM post?
Much of the uncertainty centred around KC Venugopal, one of the most powerful organisational leaders in the Congress and a close aide of Rahul Gandhi.
Unlike Satheesan, Venugopal had stronger access to the Congress high command in Delhi and significant influence within the party structure.
That created a familiar Congress dilemma:
Should the party reward the state leader who delivered the election victory, or choose someone more closely aligned with the central leadership?
The delay itself became proof of how politically important Satheesan had become.
A few years ago, he was considered a second-line Kerala Congress leader.
Today, he is the man the party eventually trusted with one of its most significant governments in the country.
What challenges will VD Satheesan face as Kerala Chief Minister?
While Satheesan enters office with strong public momentum, expectations around him are also unusually high.
His critics within the Congress have long argued that opposition politics and governance are very different skill sets.
Since Satheesan has never served as a minister before, questions remain around how he will handle Kerala’s bureaucracy, coalition pressures and economic challenges as Chief Minister.
He will also face constant comparisons with Pinarayi Vijayan’s highly centralised administrative style.
But for many Congress workers, Satheesan’s appointment represents something equally important beyond governance:
A signal that electoral performance and public connect can still outweigh Delhi power equations inside the Congress.
