Who is Tom Fletcher? First Strictly 2021 contestant confirmed as McFly singer

It's now been eight months since Bill Bailey was a surprise winner on Strictly Come Dancing, winning the Glitterball Trophy with dancing partner Oti Mabuse on the 18th series of the hit BBC show.

As the ballroom dancing competition returns to our screens later this year, fans are desperate to see how their favourite famous faces will fair as they take to the dance floor and aim to impress viewers and judges.

As McFly star Tom Fletcher is announced as one of the stars of the 2021 series, we take a look at the family man's life as he prepares to perform on a different type of stage than he's used to.

Who is Tom Fletcher?

As the founder of Brit award-winning band McFly, Tom is best known to millions of music fans as one quarter of everyone's favourite guitar strumming pop group.

Originally a part of Busted before record labels decided they'd be better as a trio, the 36-year-old songwriter created McFly in 2003 with bandmates Danny Jones, Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd on drums.

Their debut album Room on the 3rd Floor debuted at number 1 in the UK Album Chart in 2005 and they have enjoyed immense success ever since.

As of 2016, McFly have had 18 consecutive UK top 20 singles, seven of which reached number one in the UK Singles Chart, with talented Tom penning a huge amount of their hit songs.

It's not his band that have benefited from the dad-of-three's impressive songwriting skills.

The singer is the man behind the hits of many other artists and pop stars, with One Direction, Busted, the Vamps and 5 Seconds of Summer being just some of the bands he is credited with having written songs for.

In his personal life, Tom is happily married to childhood sweetheart Giovanna Falcone, who he met as a teenager while the pair were studying at the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London.

Last year, writer Giovanna tipped her husband for Strictly success when she shared a sweet video of the singer enjoying a boogie with two of their sons.

Sharing the video, the reality TV star wrote: "@TOMFLETCHER FOR @BBCSTRICTLY [laughing emoji, heart emoji]".

The singer and the I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! winner tied the knot in 2012 and the following year, Tom shared a part of their special day with fans.

In January 2012, the star uploaded a video to YouTube, titled My Wedding Speech, in which he sang to the tunes of several of McFly's most successful songs during his speech which has received over 22 million views.

The happy couple are parents to three kids together: six-year-old Buzz, four-year-old Buddy, and two-year-old Max. which may explain the singer's venture into children's literature.

In 2016, the McFly founder released his first ever solo novel The Christmasaurus which was a huge success with young readers across the country.

Since then, the Strictly star has released more books for kids, included musical versions which combine his talents as a musician and a writer.

Has anyone from McFly been on Strictly Come Dancing before?

Tom is not the first from his band to take to the BBC ballroom.

In 2011, McFly drummer and bandmate Harry Judd not only took part in Strictly Come Dancing but went on to win the show with dance partner Aliona Vilani.

Not only that, the previous year the 35-year-old also won a Children in Need special of the dancing competition, defeating The Saturdays star Rochelle Wiseman.

No pressure, Tom.

What time does Strictly Come Dancing 2021 air and what channel is it on?

In keeping with previous seasons, the 19th series will most likely begin in September.

Last year's offering was slightly delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic but it is expected that 2021's season will begin in Autumn.

Strictly Come Dancing will return to its usual channel of BBC One on Saturday nights for the main show, with the results being announced on Sunday shows.

The final is expected to air around 13 weeks after the opening show, so would be likely to be around late November or early December.
