The 2019 NFL draft is officially less than a month away.
While the focus will be on the players selected in the draft, not every NFL superstar is drafted. Recently the folks over at Touchdown Wire took a look at the greatest undrafted free agents in NFL history. One of those players was former Chiefs CB and recently retired secondary coach Emmitt Thomas. He came in at No. 9 on the list and here is what they had to say about him:
“The Kansas City Chiefs signed Emmitt Thomas as an undrafted free agent in 1966 and he never wore another uniform during his playing career. In addition to two AFL championships and three NFL championships, Thomas led both the AFL and NFL in interceptions once, finishing his career with 58 picks. A five-time Pro Bowler, two-time First Team All-Pro and two-time Second Team All-Pro, Thomas had his No. 18 retired by the Chiefs and was later inducted into both the Chiefs Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.”
This got me thinking about who is the greatest undrafted free agent in Chiefs history? Is it Emmitt Thomas like Touchdown Wire might surmise? Going off the accolades alone he certainly has it made, but there are others that have a case too.
For instance Deron Cherry was an undrafted free agent. He spent 11 seasons with the Chiefs and had six-consecutive pro bowl appearances from 1983 to 1988. Brian Waters is another option, he endured a position switch at the NFL level and went on to have a great career. If you consider undrafted players who started with other teams before joining the Chiefs, Priest Holmes and Kimble Anders could also be options as well.
