Who is the best player in Scotland? Celtic and Rangers stars vie for number one

In the hyper-partisan atmosphere of Scottish football, picking the best player in the country is never going to be a simple task - but that's exactly what the Daily Record will be doing this Saturday.

It's sure to be a divisive issue - many Rangers fans cannot conceive of praising a Celtic player, and suggest to Hoops fans that some of Steven Gerrard's squad might be able to play a bit and many will be similarly dismissive.

Glasgow's big two pay the highest wages and therefore logically attract the best players, but still many fans of the other 10 top flight clubs will find it difficult to accept one of their stars as being the best in the land - and others still will say that picking a best player is an entirely subjective task anyway, given that different specialities are required for different positions.

The fact remains though that there really is some top talent in Scotland at the moment, from the goalscoring feats of Alfredo Morelos and Odsonne Edouard to the veterans like Scott Brown and Steven Davis who are still competing at the top level.

One only has to look at Virgil van Dijk's status as the most expensive defender in history to see that players can go from Scotland's top flight to the top of the world - could the likes of Kris Ajer or Joe Aribo one day follow that trajectory?

Then there are players like Ryan Jack and Ryan Christie who have overcome difficult starts at their respective clubs to become key men in what is shaping up to be a titanic title tussle.

Outside of Glasgow too there's plenty of top talent. Steven Naismith's importance to Hearts cannot be understated, while Aberdeen won't even think about selling Scott McKenna without a record fee.

Whether you like Scott Allan's through balls or Gary Dicker's interceptions there's a lot to enjoy every weekend.

Maybe it's impossible to determine who the best player in the country is - and there's certainly no prospect of getting anything like a consensus vote.

We'll be revealing our top 50 on Saturday but here's your chance to vote for Scotland's best player.
