Who is Steven Lyons? Scotland’s underworld boss arrested in Bali in global organised crime crackdown

Gangland figure Steven Lyons, one of Scotland’s most high-profile underworld bosses, has been arrested in Bali in a major breakthrough for international law enforcement agencies probing organised crime networks spanning Europe and the Middle East.

The arrest of Lyons, long believed to be the head of Scotland’s dominant Lyons crime clan, comes after a coordinated, two-year investigation involving Police Scotland, Spain’s Guardia Civil and the UK’s National Crime Agency.

His detention on the Indonesian island follows a series of simultaneous raids across Scotland and Spain targeting alleged members of his network.

Authorities confirmed that Lyons was picked up by local police in Bali on behalf of Spanish investigators. The development follows earlier reports of his movements through Bahrain, Spain and Dubai, where he is believed to have spent extended periods.

Officials say his arrest is part of a wider effort to dismantle a transnational crime syndicate involved in drug trafficking and money laundering.

The man behind Scotland’s ‘Lyons clan’

Steven Lyons is widely regarded as the leader of the Lyons crime group, a powerful gang accused of orchestrating:

  • Large-scale cocaine trafficking into Scotland
  • Multi-million euro money laundering operations
  • Criminal activities coordinated across Spain and the UAE

The group is also believed to have forged links with international cartels, significantly expanding its reach beyond the UK.

Bloody feud spanning decades

The Lyons clan has been embroiled in a violent feud with the rival Daniel group since 2001, sparked by a dispute over a stolen cocaine shipment in Glasgow.

Over the years, the rivalry has led to multiple killings, attempted murders and shootings, including:

  • A 2006 attack in Glasgow in which Lyons survived but his cousin was killed
  • The murder of Daniel gang enforcer Kevin Carroll in 2010
  • Ongoing tit-for-tat violence extending into recent years

Killings in Spain add fresh intrigue

The feud took an international turn in May last year when Lyons’ brother, Eddie Lyons Jr, and associate Ross Monaghan were shot dead in a bar in Fuengirola on Spain’s Costa del Sol.

While Spanish police linked the suspect to the rival Daniel gang, Scottish authorities have said there is no confirmed connection to the broader gang war.

Coordinated raids and arrests across Europe

Lyons’ arrest coincided with a major crackdown that saw:

  • Multiple properties raided across Glasgow and nearby towns
  • Simultaneous operations in Spain, including Barcelona and Malaga
  • A total of 13 arrests across both countries

Law enforcement agencies from Europol, Turkey, the Netherlands and the UAE also assisted, with assets including land, villas and business shares seized.

Investigators say the operation, launched in 2024, targets high-level organised crime involving drug trafficking and financial networks that span several countries.

With Lyons now in custody, authorities are expected to push further into uncovering the full scale of the criminal enterprise and its international links.
