Who is Steve Allen? From Tilly Ramsay spat to insulting the blind, all the DJ's blunders

LBC's early morning host Steve Allen has been put into the spotlight this morning after he was heard on air making comments about Tilly Ramsay's weight.

Steve, 67, was heard saying of Tilly, 19: "She can’t blooming well dance. I’m bored with her already.

"She’s a chubby little thing, isn’t she? Have you noticed? Probably her dad’s cooking I should imagine."

Tilly, who is a contestant on this year's edition of Strictly Come Dancing and daughter of celebrity Gordon Ramsay, responded to the broadcaster in an Instagram post to her 1.1million followers, where she made it clear she would "draw the line at people commenting on my appearance."

"Please remember that words can hurt and at the end of the day I am only 19," she reminded the DJ three times her senior.

"I won't tolerate people that think it's ok to publicly comment and scrutinise anyone's weight and appearance. Love Tilly xx"

Allen has since received criticism from the likes of Love Island's Dr Alex and comedian Janson Manford for his comments towards Ramsay.

Ofcom has confirmed it is assessing complaints relating to Allen's comments towards Ramsay.

Who is Steve Allen?

Steve Allen is a radio presenter (PA)

Steve first appeared on the airwaves in the 70s where he began broadcasting on the United Biscuit Network, a station for the workers of the United Biscuits factories in London, Scotland, Manchester and Liverpool.

After the Network closed in 1979 he made the switch over to LBC presenting a variety of shows, often late night, before landing in his current role in the early breakfast show from 4am to 7am.

Allen is LBC's only host who doesn't take calls from listeners during his shows, although does read out messages.

Has Allen got into hot water in the past?

A number of complaints have been raised for Allen's outspoken views, with him having been found to be in breach of Ofcom's broadcasting codes on a number of occasions.

In 2017 he caught flack for allegedly making comments in a show the year before that discriminated against Portuguese people.

In an Ofcom report, which found LBC in breach of its broadcasting code, it is reported Allen said: "I’ve heard some stupid people over the time, but Joel would be the one actually. He comes from Portugal. Obviously, the further you get abroad, the dumber they become really."

In an unrelated conversation later in the show he is believed to have said: "I suspect they are living in Portugal. That’s about the saddest place we have found at the moment where they are really are a bit thick. I mean honestly, it’s almost too embarrassing for words.”

In 2018 he was breach of Ofcom's broadcasting code again after commenting on a newspaper article about a blind man with a fear of dogs who was considering using a guide horse instead.

He reportedly said: “Well if he’s blind, tell him it’s a rabbit or something. I’ve never heard of anything so stupid.”

“Not every blind person gets a dog. To give him a horse is quite ludicrous. He’s afraid of dogs. Why? Why’s he afraid of dogs? Well don’t give him – don’t give him anything at all then.”

He was found in breach again that year for allegedly saying: "Brawling travellers shut down a holiday village’. Why do we have to start being nice to travellers? Every time I read a story in the newspaper its either thieving, robbing or brawling. And this one was terrible, all the businesses had to close and everything else. We had them moving into a hospital car park a short while ago, it was all very odd. What is the matter with them? What is the matter with them?”

LBC has been approached by the Mirror regarding all of the alleged comments from Mr Allen.
