Who is Sir Keir Starmer? Labour names successor to Jeremy Corbyn

Sir Keir Starmer has been named as the new Labour leader but who is he?

On April 4 he was named Labour leader and Angela Rayner as deputy leader.

A former barrister Sir Keir was elected as MP for Holborn and St Pancras in 2015 following the retirement of Frank Dobson.

Prior to his career in politics Sir Keir enjoyed a decorated legal career where he notably worked for Helen Steel and David Morris in the McLibel case, which went to court in 1997.

He became a QC in 2002 and in 2008 became Head of the Crown Prosecution Service and Director of Public Prosecutions.

He has held a number of key roles in Jeremy Corbyn's shadow cabinet - most notably shadow Brexit secretary.

He married Victoria Alexander, a solicitor, in 2007, and has a son and daughter.

He was awarded his knighthood in 2014, a year before he was elected MP, for "services to law and criminal justice".

Though he has the right to be known as Sir Keir he reportedly chooses not to be referred to by that title.

Sir Keir inherits a party that has been deeply divided and lost a number of key seats in the North East.
