Who is Shay Given in Soccer Aid 2021?

With the annual Soccer Aid taking place tonight, many may be wondering who Shay Given is.

Séamus John James 'Shay' Given is a former professional Irish goalkeeper who is currently the first-team coach at Derby County.

He started his career at the Blackburn Rovers, soon after he was involved in the team at Sunderland who won the Football League First Division title in 1996-96.

In 1997 he joined Newcastle United and quickly began competing to be the first choice goalkeeper for the Premier League.

He has also played for other high-profile clubs including Manchester City and Aston Villa.

Given, 45, has also earned a prestigious place in the FIFA Century Club after surpassing a total of 100 caps - his first international cap was gained in 1996.

Given is the second-highest capped Republic of Ireland player after Robbie Keane with 134 caps for his country, earning him star status in the Republic of Ireland.

Now in its 10th year, donations from Soccer Aid go to Unicef and this year the focus will again be on the global impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Among those taking part are Olly Murs, Lee Mack, Mo Farah, Gary Neville, Wayne Rooney, Usain Bolt, Roman Kemp, Yungblud, Nigel de Jong and Rivaldo.

The game takes place on Saturday September 4, with kick-off at 7.30pm with coverage starting on ITV at 6.30pm.

Tickets are still available here.
