Who is New Zealand v Canada referee Romain Poite?

Romain Poite, the former Toulouse police detective, is tackling a different sort of law-breaker these days after putting down the baton for the referee's whistle.

He was the man in the middle for the Wales-Ireland World Cup warm-up in Cardiff last month and will again take charge of Warren Gatland's side for their massive Pool D clash with Australia on the weekend.

The 44-year-old made his World Cup debut in 2007 as an assistant referee in the pool stage match between Ireland and Namibia, while he was involved as a touch judge or TMO for three games in the 2009 Six Nations.

He made his full Six Nations debut as a referee in 2010 and refereed four matches in the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand.

In this year's Six Nations, his first game in charge during the tournament was between Scotland and Ireland in Edinburgh, which ended 22-13 to the Irish.

He also ran the line in the Ireland v England opener.

He also refereed the deciding Tests of both the 2013 and 2017 Lions tours.

The latter involved a controversial late call that saw him not penalise Ken Owens for an apparent offside which denied New Zealand victory and resulted in a drawn series.

Poite also infamously took charge of a Six Nations match between England and Italy in 2017 which saw him tell England star James Haskell that he was 'the referee, not the coach' after Italy bamboozled Eddie Jones' men with some unexpected ruck tactics.

He also handled Wales' thrilling win over Australia at the weekend in Tokyo.
