Who is Richard Arnold? Man Utd's new chief executive set to replace Ed Woodward

Richard Arnold is set to become Manchester United's chief executive, replacing the outgoing Ed Woodward.

Woodward announced his departure earlier this year in the wake of the failed Super League fiasco, in which United were involved.

It left a gap in the club's hierarchy, but one that Arnold is now going to fill.

He will hold the title of CEO at Old Trafford, becoming the first man since David Gill in 2013 to do so with one insider stating that he will become the company's chief executive.

Woodward currently holds the title of executive vice-chairman, but Arnold will assume a different tag.

Formerly an executive at InterVoice, a Nasdaq-listed technology company, Arnold was previously United's commercial director.

Arnold qualified as a chartered account back in 1996 and first became involved with the Premier League giants back in 2007.

Originally he came in as Group Managing Director and Company Director with his remit involving the growing of the club's sponsorship business, retail, merchandising, apparel and product licensing business.

Arnold was nominated for SportBusiness International's Sports innovator of the year list in 2011 for his work.

He was promoted to the Group Managing Director back in 2013.

Woodward will leave Old Trafford having been unable to achieve what he had wanted on the pitch, whilst enjoying notable success of it.

His background in banking has helped him to continue growing the club commercially amid accusations that such achievements were placed above those on the field.

Woodward has sanctioned huge signings during his tenure, many of which haven't worked out.

Club-record signing Paul Pogba could leave on a free this summer whilst other big investments like Romelu Lukaku and Angel di Maria didn't stay long.

Woodward also handed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a new deal in the summer and backed in publicly in a statement.

He said: “I am sure that with the changes we have made on-field and to the coaching and football staff in recent years this great club will soon be lifting silverware again. It deserves to."

Months later though and the outgoing club chief had axed the Norwegian following a poor run of form with Ralf Rangnick now in charge on an interim basis.

The appointment of the next permanent manager will now be part of Arnold's remit.
