Who is reported Nottingham Forest 'target' Gavin Massey?

Nottingham Forest have been linked with Wigan Athletic winger Gavin Massey.

The 26-year-old is out of contract in the summer and rumoured to be stalling over a new deal amid interest from both Forest and Queens Park Rangers.

His current club, Wigan have been embroiled in a relegation fight down at the wrong end of the table this season and Massey is keen to climb the Championship ranks for next season.

Raised just 300 yards from Vicarage Road, Massey was wanted by a number of England's biggest clubs as a teenager.

Liverpool came close to prising him from Watford's grasp, but the then 17-year-old opted to stay with the Hornets and was expected to be ready to make the step up to the first-team as an 18-year-old.

He made his debut for the Hornets on the last day of the Championship in 2010 against Coventry City, but would only ever go on to make nine appearances for the club, all of which came from the bench.

Five clubs in ten years

It took a loan spell away at Yeovil Town for Massey to score his first professional goal, and, just like buses, they both came at once. His double helped the Glovers to a 2-2 draw away at Colchester United, the side he soon joined to finally kick-start his career.

After just eight league starts with Yeovil, Massey was recalled by Watford and sent instead to the U's, where he immediately impressed.

However, the loan spell was cut short as Watford struggled with injuries to Troy Deeney and Marvin Sordell.

Upon the expiry of his contract at Vicarage Road, the pacey winger joined Colchester on a free and notched 20 goals in 158 games.

After three years at the Colchester Community Stadium, Massey was sold to Leyton Orient for an undisclosed fee where he was yet again a permanent starter.

Orient were relegated out of the Football League that season, but his performances were good enough to earn him a jump to League One with Wigan.

Injuries

Since joining Wigan in 2017, injuries have prevented Massey from appearing as regularly in blue and white as he had hoped.

This season it was a hamstring injury that kept him out from August until December, and has reoccurred a number of times since.

Massey returned from his latest set-back in February and since then has been in fine form for the 'Tics, scoring four times in ten starts, including a double against Leeds that all but ended their automatic promotion hopes.

The man to bring much-needed pace?

The 26-year-old speedster could be the man to add some much desired pace to the Forest side should Martin O'Neill manage to tempt him away from putting pen to paper on a new Wigan deal.

Quick with his feet, Massey while at Colchester would often look to beat his man down the right before attempting to play inside, as opposed to crossing first-time.

Massey has never been afraid to run at defenders and, while being predominantly right-sided, did feature in all areas of attack for Leyton Orient, helped by his powerful right foot that has seen him bag 40 Football League goals.
