Who is Raoul Moat and what did he do? New ITV drama coming in April

An ITV drama is set to tell the tale of the Newcastle killer who gunned down three people.

The three-part drama The Hunt for Raoul Moat will hit television screens on April 16, 17 and 18. This will be followed by a documentary about the manhunt, which will be broadcast on April 19.

It has been nearly 13 years since the infamous incident, in which the Moat shot three people in 24 hours. He then went on the run for more than a week.

So what exactly happened?

Who is Raoul Moat?

Raoul Moat was a former bouncer from Newcastle who went on a shooting spree. He had a violent history and shortly before the incident had been serving an 18-week prison sentence at HMP Durham for assaulting a nine-year-old family member.

What happened?

A few days after being released in 2010, Moat in a rage decided to target his ex partner Samantha Stobbart, her new partner 29-year-old Christopher Brown, and PC David Rathband.

It is believed he was furious because he had a child with Ms Stobbart. He had hoped to restart their relationship when he left prison, but was angry when he realised she was with someone else.

It is claimed Moat had gone to visit his ex. But, when he arrived, he had apparently heard the pair laughing about him, which sent him into a rage.

Moat shot the couple — leaving Ms Stobbart with life-changing injuries and killing Mr Brown.

He then went on the run.

Where did he go?

Police officers searched for Moat and, over the course of the week, found many abandoned campsites where it is believed he had slept rough.

The pursuit finally ended a week later and a six-hour standoff ensued.

After being cornered, Moat died by suicide and was pronounced dead at the scene on July 10, 2010.

What happened to the victims?

Chris Brown was pronounced dead at the scene of the first shooting and Samantha Stobbart was left badly injured but survived the attack.

PC Rathband was the third victim after Moat shot him twice while he sat in his patrol car at a roundabout on the A1 and A69. He was in hospital for three weeks, but survived, although he lost his sight following the attack.

What is the ITV drama about?

ITV’s drama will focus on the victims' stories. ITV said it would “focus on the idea of domestic violence and how Northumbria Police and the probation services dealt with Moat.”

It has been commissioned by ITV’s Head of Drama, Polly Hill, who will oversee production on behalf of the channel.

Moat will be played by North East actor Matt Stokoe, who is from Durham.
