Who is Pete Buttigieg? Surprise contender in Democratic Presidential race

Pete Buttigieg has become an unexpected front runner in the race to pick the Democratic candidate to face off against Donald Trump in year's American Presidential election.

Despite the chaos in reporting of the results, Mayor Pete pulled off a top place finish in the Iowa caucus, with Vermont Senator and left-wing firebrand Bernie Sanders close behind.

The little-known former mayor of a town in Indiana mayor has risen to prominence after impressing on debate stages.

An openly gay man, Mr Buttigieg, pronounced Butt-eig-edge, is only the second LGBT politicians to run to be President.

He previously said: "I recognise the audacity of doing this as a Midwestern millennial mayor.

"More than a little bold, at age 37, to seek the highest office in the land."

Mr Buttigieg is a former Rhodes scholar, studying at both Harvard and Oxford, before serving in the Afghanistan War.

He married his husband, Chasten, in 2017 after they met on dating app Hinge.

And he would be the youngest person to become president, turning 39 the day before the next inauguration, on Jan. 20, 2021.

Theodore Roosevelt was 42 when he took office - while John F. Kennedy was 43 and Bill Clinton 46.

He was first elected mayor of South Bend, which has a population of about 100,000, back in 2011 when he was just 29.

He is the first millennial to run for president - a member of the generation born between 1981 and 1996 - alongside Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard who is also 37.

Despite his strong performance in Iowa, he is still a longshot for the presidency - with his support expected to slip in more diverse states later on in the race.

It won't be the first time he has experienced loss in a national Democratic race.

Mr Buttigieg ran for Democratic National Committee chairman in 2017, but dropped out when it was apparent he did not have sufficient support.
