Tory MP Patrick Spencer has been charged with sexually assaulting two women at London private members club, The Groucho Club.

Spencer, 37, has been charged for two alleged attacks that took place in August 2023. According to the Met Police, the charges are related to two separate women.

The MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich will now appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday June 16.

But who is Patrick Spencer?

Who is Patrick Spencer?

Mr Spencer is a Conservative MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, having first been elected in the most recent July 2024 election, winning by a 9.2 per cent majority.

He formerly ran to become the MP for West Ham in the 2017 General Election, but lost out to the Labour party.

During his maiden speech in parliament on July 25, Mr Spencer said of his constituency: “ The Suffolk farming and agricultural community are such an important part of our local society, and they are also emblematic of our local culture and identity, with their no-nonsense attitude to hard work, love for family and community, complete and utter ambivalence to the weather, and deep affection for our natural environment. I am sure that all Members have their bias, but I am of the firm belief that the people of Central Suffolk and North Ipswich are the finest our country has to offer.”

He added: “More than anything, [the Conservatives] are about giving people the opportunity to fulfill their potential”

Mr Spencer also spoke about fighting to empower his constituents and that “at a time when faith and trust in politics is at an all-time low among those who feel locked out of our economy and our society” he will ensure “Britain works for everyone.”

In December 2024, Mr Spencer argued for tougher sentencing to go hand-in-hand with the government’s call for increased prison capacity. He said: “I welcome what this government is doing to increase prison capacity, but what is the Secretary of State going to do on tougher sentencing?”

“And I ask that because if [Shabana Mahmood] goes to my constituency of Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, she’ll be met with a tough gruff East Anglian accent that says ‘what’s the point of building prison places if you’re not going to use them?’”

He was also appointed PPS (Parliamentary Private Secretary) to Shadow Education spokesperson Laura Trott, who has been the Conservative MP for Sevenoaks since 2019. Prior to this appointment, Mr Spencer had worked under Sir Iain Duncan Smith at the Centre for Social Justice and then, as an adviser in the Department for Education.

Mr Spencer is a member of the Education Select Committee and is an officer for the APPG for Babies and Care Experienced People.
